Job Description

About the team: Industry Solutions

Industry Solutions is our domain-focused delivery organization at Cognite. We are a cross-functional mix of Cogniters, consultants, and interns that build Minimal Viable Products to solve industrial problems and deploy these solutions to a production-grade environment. We work with a laser focus on the shortest path to sustainable value capture for our users. We support one another, ask good questions, and give each other constructive feedback. The set of problems we tackle are incredibly diverse, so we celebrate aptitude and eagerness to learn. Our goal is to leverage our diverse set of strengths and backgrounds to build innovative solutions and nurture a great culture.

About the role

As a part of the Industry Solutions team you will travel to our customers around Europe (when things open up again) to help build industrial solutions on top of liberated data. Industrial problems are detailed and specific, so we work hand in hand with subject matter experts and end-users to design and build a solution with measurable usage. Modern design and development practices are an essential part of this and so Cognite takes an active role in the Digital Transformation of our customers’ infrastructure. Expect to be exposed to and able to contribute to this transformation as a digital professional.

As an Industrial Data Developer you will provide analytics and developmentcompetencies to our cross-functional customer teams, focusing on

  • Participating in intensive whiteboard sessions and workshops with process engineers and equipment experts to understand the problem and how it maps to the customer’s data
  • Wrangling connected industrial data (1000+ of sensors, billions of datapoints, work orders, log entries, etc.) in CDF using our Python SDK, Apache Spark Data Source and visual analytics tools
  • Implementing and deploying real time calculations and models
  • Building engaging data products using Plotly Dash, Grafana or Power BI
  • Working together with solution architects to minimize technical debt and operationalize the end solution

With this call for Data Developers, we’re looking for data scientists, software engineers, data engineers and industry specialists, or even better, candidates with mixed interests and experience across more than one of these professions.

Teamwork is an important part of the role. You collaborate well, and bring out the best in your colleagues as they do in you. You are passionate about doing things well and take initiative and responsibility to ensure that the team reaches its goals. Being a good communicator across multiple disciplines is an important part of this. You pursue your personal development and share your knowledge with the team.

Engineering/industry experience is a huge plus, but what’s most important is that you are excited to learn about the physical industrial world from the real experts, our customers. To solve industrial problems, we (1) understand the basics of how massive compressors, turbines, heat exchangers, generators, hydrocyclones and other industrial equipment work and (2) understand the production process and causes of instabilities and negative environmental effects. Excellent communication skills and relationship building with the customer are key to success.

This role can require a large amount of travel, though recent global events have relaxed that requirement. There are also often possibilities to relocate/commute temporarily (3 months) to work on customer projects if you are excited by the prospect of getting to know a new city.

Tasks and responsibilities
  • Engage with subject matter experts to map physical phenomena to industrial data
  • Perform data cleaning and exploratory data analysis
  • Implement physical/empirical models in Python
  • Prototype and deploy machine learning models
  • Utilize and contribute to solution templates and best practices
  • Build data products in Grafana or Power BI (more tools being supported every day)
  • Work with customers in both short-term and 3-5 month projects globally. Travel will vary but projects can be expected to be up to 4 days a week at the customer location.
  • Follow internal learning track to develop domain knowledge
Some of these statements should describe you
  • Study in a quantitative field (MSc preferred)
  • 0-15 years experience
  • An experienced Python coder with a well-equipped toolbox
  • Excited by the prospect of working in a new environment
  • Interested in machine learning and automation
  • A thoughtful, self-driven learner that can find the optimum balance between individual research and questioning subject matter experts
  • Grit and determination to "figure it out" when technology is disagreeable
  • Humility to ask for help when needed
  • Passion for building things
