Job Description

The Play Magnus Group is focused on delivering the best online services and experiences for the growing number of chess players around the world. We have united some of the most exciting brands and platforms into one ecosystem to together grow the sport of chess.

Play Magnus is co-owned by Magnus Carlsen. Yes, that's the Norwegian world chess champion you may have heard a bit about. We're actively working on our App Suite consisting of games such as Play Magnus, Magnus Trainer, and Tactics Frenzy.

We're looking for someone to join our App Suite team as a Back-end Developer. In this role, you'll take part in developing products that millions of users will experience. At Play Magnus, you'll have a hunger to learn fast and take on responsibility.

You'll enjoy working in a team environment that's dynamic and agile yet focused. You'll have the ability to participate in creating the world's best chess-related games. Yes, we're taking it to the next level!

Your responsibilities

  • The main focus will be to develop new and exciting products contributing and having responsibilities on the server-side.
  • Take responsibility for server-side architecture with over 500 000 monthly active users.
  • Maintain and develop server-side functionality, both async and real-time.
  • Be fluent in TypeScript/JavaScript and SQL.
  • Be eager to learn and become comfortable with programming languages such as Swift, Kotlin, and C# whenever needed.
  • An interest in functional programming is an advantage but not a necessity.

Requirements

  • Have completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or natural sciences. Exceptional skills can compensate for a completed degree.
  • Be a team player, passionate and self-motivated. Demonstrate modesty and respect when receiving/giving feedback from your team and vice versa.
  • Be comfortable with writing and speaking English daily with our international team.
  • Have an interest in learning more about chess. You don't need to be good or even know how to play chess, though.
  • Have a passion for mobile games. Experience with Android and iOS as mobile platforms and Unity game engine is a plus.

With us, you will

  • Be a part of our engineering dream team, consisting of crazy computer engineers, and a genius mathematician.
  • Be working with challenging and diverse tech tasks.
  • Have the ability to learn from experienced colleagues and eventually take on more responsibility.
  • Be able to impress people by saying that you work in a team that develops apps for the World Champion in chess. It works better than Tinder, we've heard.

Benefits

  • Working with the award-winning team behind the World Chess Champion's digital products.
  • Working with and for a world-class brand.
  • We have offices located in central Oslo, but we practice a lot of home office and flex-time.
  • The chance to work with products that are used worldwide and have had millions of downloads.
